A little less than two weeks after Maine’s State Senate narrowly passed the National Popular Vote Bill – which would guarantee that in presidential elections, the winner of the popular vote gets the majority of Electoral College votes – the state House has struck it down.

For decades, Maine has had an innovate (and unique) system for proportionately distributing its electoral votes; the National Popular Vote Bill would have gone a step further by strictly tying electoral votes to the people’s will.

The bill would have gone into effect as soon as “states possessing a majority of the electoral votes—that is, enough electoral votes to elect a President (270 of 538),” had signed on, according to National Popular Vote, Inc., a California-based organization. I guess Maine won’t contribute to that majority.
