Justin Alfond is running for state senate

Munjoy Hiller Justin Alfond, whose major claims to fame include founding the Maine chapter of the League of Young Voters and the Opportunity Maine program, made the rumors official when he announced today that he will run for the state senate seat currently occupied by Ethan Strimling (who is, in turn, running for the US House seat currently occupied by Tom Allen).

If successful in 2008, Alfond would represent the Portland peninsula and much of the area south of Forest Avenue, according to a press release issued this morning by Alfond's communications director (and Phoenix contributer) Tony Giampetruzzi.

Elizabeth Mitchell, daughter of Senate Majority Leader Libby Mitchell, previously announced her plan to run for the seat, but changed her mind at the end of January. Cliff Ginn, who serves as president of the Opportunity Maine board, and as vice president of the Back Cove Neighborhood Association, is running, but doesn't yet have a web presence.
