Press Herald to get daily competition?

Our friends over at Mainebiz are reporting that the Conway Daily Sun will open a Portland Daily Sun sometime this month. It's expected to be free, and won't have an office, if I'm understanding the quote correctly - "our office will be the coffeehouse." (Saves cash, for sure, but how do you drop things off for people to look at or write about?)

No word yet on how many reporters, or if any will be full-time. UPDATE: The Press Herald reports there will be an editor and two reporters, and that it will be printed in Conway, New Hampshire.

Interestingly, the domain name PortlandDailySun.com is owned by the Lewiston Sun Journal. Not sure what that means, if anything.

As for the choice of name, I understand - the company also owns the Berlin Daily Sun and the Laconia Daily Sun. But does anyone else remember the last daily newspaper named Sun that started in Portland? 13 days, for the Portland Morning Sun. Very similar model - launching into a bad economy, printing 5000-ish copies, free distribution.

Here's the AP story from 2001, courtesy of the Berkeley Daily Planet:

Daily in Portland, Maine, ceases publication after 13 issues

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The Portland Morning Sun suspended publication Oct. 25 after 13 issues.

Edward G. Pickett, the Morning Sun’s editor and publisher, said individuals who were expected to invest in the paper after it launched backed out because of the unstable economy. Without more funding, the paper could not make it through the initial startup period.

The paper, which was published Monday through Friday and distributed for free, debuted on Oct. 8 with a circulation of about 5,000 in the Greater Portland area. It had local reporters and carried news stories from The New York Times and The Associated Press.

The paper’s largest competitor was the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, which is owned by The Seattle Times Co. and has a daily circulation of about 75,000.

Pickett, owner and publisher of the Portland Business Journal, said advertising revenue was increasing. He said the newspaper might return at a later date.
