Imitation, flattery, and The Big Picture

The New York Times has a new, full-screen photo blog called "Lens"--and it might not exist without Boston.com's "The Big Picture." From a write-up in Photo District News:

Lens draws some inspiration from The Big Picture a photo blog published by Boston.com, which is also owned by The New York Times Company. The Big Picture pioneered a wide-screen layout that took advantage of improving resolutions of computer screens. It proved popular with audiences and has been widely imitated.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the Times Co. should do this sort of thing more often.

In Times's defense, they'd probably imitate the Globe more often if the Globe did more worth imitating. (Full disclosure? Here at the Phoenix, we shamelessly ripped off "Big Picture" by doubling the photo size of our slideshows: see thephoenix.com/inpictures.) Lens isn't anywhere near as gorgeous as the Big Pic, but it's also far more complex -- it's a full-service staff photo blog with lots of talking about pictures. It can be viewed either as a blog or as a not-quite-there-yet flash slideshow -- and as such it misses the utter simplicity of the Big Picture, which is one of the big attractions of the Globe's version, at least for me.
