Guild no-shows: what kept you away?

This may be the first time I've ever said this, but...I've been wondering the same thing as Joe Fitzgerald:  why did so many Boston Newspaper Guild members skip Monday's high-stakes contract vote?

If any of you no-shows happen to read this, feel free to weigh in. I'd love to hear why you didn't vote, and I know I'm not the only one.

The silence is deafening. Perhaps the people who chose not to vote are the folks with the lifetime job gurantees and are still learning about this new craze known as the internet?

Phil, some of the people who didn't vote were co-op students who didn't know they were eligible to vote. Other folks were on assignment, or just screwed up and didn't file an absentee ballot in time because they were undecided. They probably feel shitty enough as is without more piling on.

And your quip about the internet falls flat in several ways. I'm in the "book of life" but I voted yes...and I'm someone who learned about this "new internet craze" with Usenet, the pre-Salon version of The Well, and Mosaic.

Mike,if it was my quip that got you to respond I will say my mission was accomplished. I, like Adam and Joe Fitz, was just very interested in hearing from someone as to why such a large group of people would not vote on something so important. I'm glad that you posted what you did as it starts to answer why some of the guild didn't vote. As for the co-op students who didn't know they could vote, that sounds like the guild leadership really did their members a great disservice.

Phil, I understand. Those of us who voted, regardless of how we felt, were puzzled that there were so many no-shows. In fact, folks who voted "no" would have liked a stronger mandate, with the reasoning being that it would have established a better bargaining position.
