But seriously: reading through the text of Boston City Councilor Sam Yoon's open-government proposal, I kept thinking: Don Saklad must be thrilled! Or, maybe not. After all, the word "stenographic"

re: Yoon caves to Saklad

Open and transparent government is a good thing. It's about time a Boston City Councilor took a stand on this.

Yoon's resolution is about the operation of basic, transparent government. Unfortunately for him, in the past year Menino has stolen some of the thunder by rolling out a much better city calendar system that describes lots of these board/commission meetings -- and often gives the agendas.

But the meeting minutes? Ask the Boston Licensing Board (not a city board) and they'll sell you an audio tape. And I'm not sure what I would get in return if I requested copies of the Women's Commission's minutes for the past year.

But Saklad's stenographic output? What the city really needs to do is stream video of them, along with automated voice-recognition transcripts (aka closed-captioning). No need for old stenographic technology.

How to get the city to do this? Lawsuit against the city filed by the hard of hearing alleging unequal access under the Americans With Disabilities Act. Any fair readers here have legal standing?

I'm curious as to how the rest of the Council is going to take this proposal. I mean half the fun of being an elected official in this city is having access to all of these shadowy boards that no one knows, yet control everything. Maybe Saklad would be happy if every listing also had contact info for the stenographer taking notes!

While Feeney etc splash in the mud and express outrage over soiled clothes, Yoon is doing something to drain the swamp that allows corruption (or alleged corruption!) to fester.
