Root, Root, Root....

Dan Kennedy got there first on his blog, so let me second and third his motion. Today's big, splashy, photo-laden page 1 Globe story hyping (there's no other way to describe it) the Red Sox VIP travel packages is a poster child for the evils of corporate synergy. And the story's disclosure of the New York Times Company's 17 percent interest in the ballclub in the 15th paragraph on the jump page doesn't cut the mustard as a get-out-of-jail-free card.

This is a cheery sales pitch for the Globe corporate sibling's revenue scheme masquerading as a news story -- complete with handy schedules, the phone number included in a graphic, and such come-hither phrasing as "the biggest selling point is perhaps the Sox access to players" and "other VIP touches include a concierge service that helps vacationers find restaurants in the city they're visiting."

There isn't a discouraging word heard throughout the entire piece, not even a mention of the economic/class issue involved in selling packages that can top $1000 -- and that doesn't include air fare! In the immortal words of Phil Rizzuto, Holy Cow! How does this pass muster in the Globe newsroom?

You don't have to be a conspiracy buff to be alarmed about this story and its placement.

Explain why you feel imperiled? Or, is this just another example of hyperbole run amok? Or, maybe a bit of drivel?

Firmly, if you can't figure out why allowing the Globe to run a free ad for a corporate cousin -- on the front page of a paper read by more than 1 million people a day -- might be a violation of journalistic ethics, I ain't gonna try and explain it to you.

I fully agree that the VIP travel package story was at the very least shady and more likely a compromise of journalistic ethics. On the other hand, Dan S.'s column today was utter puke, and doesn't do much for his cause other than making himself look like a complete hypocrite. Danny Boy, if you're that much of a man of the people and you're so upset by the Globe being in bed with the Sox (or, if you must, your cutesy sobriquet $ox...gee, no one has EVER thought of replacing an S with a dollar sign, how very clever of you!) then...get out. There's that other paper across town, the one that tries as hard as you do to be all street and townie and fer-da-little-guy. They'd be happy to have you. What's that, Danny Boy? You don't want to leave your cushy well-paid job to go to work for a mediocre paper that's probably within about 18 months of folding because Pat Purcell has no idea what he's doing? Oh. Well, then shut your punk ass up.

shaughnessy was right on both counts. the $ox obviously try to gouge fans whenever they can. he was also right that the globe has a major conflict of interest with the nyt part ownership of the $ox. give him credit for having the cajones for submitting the obvious for publication. (kudos also to someone at the globe for running it). that doesnt make it go away. cant the nyt find something else to invest in, for gods sake? put some sulzberger money into russian oil and gas. something. anything.

El Kabong sounds like he is part of the cartel. And like them, he just doesn't get it.

This is another example of what I was trying to explain to someone last week- that the Times Co.'s ownership stake in the Red Sox hasn't seem to have adversely affected the Globe's Sports coverage- its affected the rest of the paper- especially the Sidekick section which sometimes reads like a school paper for the Red Sox at times

Dan seems to have the magical power to be able to predict the weather in springtime in New England, something that often eludes professional meteorologists. Here's another idea why the Sox might have held off on the rain delay before cancelling: Maybe it was the getaway game of a series and they were trying to get the game in, rather than an insidious plot to milk a couple exta bucks on hot dogs. And, I mean, he's never done anything like use his column to promote his books at his employers and readers expense, right?

Ernie, the only cartel I'm part of is the cartel of Shut The Fuck Up, Danny Boy. As soon as you know how to make that pay, lemme know.

Hey El Kabong, Danny should shut up for a lot of reasons, but to tell him he shouldn't knock the red sox because his bosses own a piece of them, or be a man and quit is very misguided. Forgive Dan for not quitting but choosing instead to work and feed his family. Unlike the arrogant bastards who own the team and look at us New Englanders as nothing more than laboratory rats for their entertainment, Danny Boy, like most of us, needs to work for a living. Hey Will, As far as a get-a-way day, it wasn't. It was for New York, but the Sox don't take into consideration the needs of the Yankees. Larry Luchino just thinks he's smarter than everyone.
