Gitell is Gone

Good luck to Seth Gitell, a former Phoenician and good guy who had at times a testing job working as press secretary for Tom Menino. But you've got to love the last line in this Globe online piece  today breaking the news that Gitell is resigning.

Gitell's last day will be June 30. He said the mayor was unavailable for comment.

Even in announcing his own resignation Gitell was dutifully manning his post, letting the media know that his boss would remain mum on the matter.

What about journalistic integrity and his transition from The Boston Phoenix to the Mayor?...

Dear dsaklad. As someone who made the transition from journalism once (in 1986) to work as a press secretary in a Congressional campaign and then went back to work as a journalist (the Phoenix in 1987), I've always adhered to the credo enunciated by a wise friend of mine. You can go through the revolving door once, but not twice.

I'm not sure what you mean... is there an actual law? is it custom? do you have actual cases showing that nobody has ever done that twice? who says?

dsaklad: As I think I explained in my posting "a wise friend of mine" said. Of course, there are no laws and rules governing this -- there are no laws and rules governing journalism as a profession. The point I was trying to make is that being the guy who writes the story and being the guy who spins the guy who writes the story are two dramatically different endeavors. If you spend too much time doing the later, it becomes very difficult to do the former. So my "twice" revolving door idea is simply a theory, not a mandate.
