You're the editor: site the Sopranos!

Say you run a major metropolitan daily. The day after the Sopranos ends forever, where do you put your write-up?

Some possibilities: front page above the fold, like the Globe? Bottom of the front page, like the Times? Or tucked back on C1, like the Post?

So shocked that it received above-the-fold treatment, I actually read the argue - hey, there must have been something socially significant about the episode right? Well, turns out, not so much. It was ambiguous. Right. After reading the article from front to end, I decided that the Sapranos was as irrelevant as it ever was in my life. I, like most people, don't have HBO, never watched the show and don't give a rats ass. I guess this means the editors of the paper have an active subscription.

The Globe got this right. This was the most talked-about subject on Monday, and rightly so. The bottom line is that even the people who hated the ending really cared about what happened to Tony and his family -- and given what a bad person he is, that's testimony to how well done the show was. The best show on television over the past six years coming to an end is a big deal; good for the Globe for having the wisdom to recognize it would be the main conversation of the day.

UP, you make some good points. But I wonder about the suggestion (which I think is implicit in your post) that the "main conversation of the day" should be the story that tops the paper. Generally, I'd say that's probably a good guideline. But what about, say, Paris Hilton's legal contretemps? Hilton's premature release from jail last Thursday was probably the "main conversation" heading into Friday, but it didn't top the paper, thank goodness. I guess the question is this: when shouldn't a "main conversation" be the lead story? Remember, prior to the Sopranos, we had Tom Brady's upcoming paternity...
