The Globe's stench series

On Monday, the Globe looked at the nasty smell on the Lynn and Nahant shorelines.

Today, it was the malodor in parts of Chelsea.

I like this gross-aroma series (which, btw, hasn't officially been identified as a series). But how long can the Globe keep going? How many more terrible smells can there possibly be in Greater Boston?

(Readers, that's your cue.)

In all seriousness, the Globe's smell-o-rama reminds me of a comment Brian McGrory, the paper's new metro editor, made when I spoke with him earlier this year. As I recall--and I'm paraphrasing here--McGrory said he wanted the paper's local coverage to give readers a stronger collective sense of place.  Thus far, I think he's succeeding--thanks to features like these, but also thanks to Matt Viser's strong performance on the What-Doesn't-Work-In-Boston beat.

Lived in Lynn in the early eighties prior to the harbour cleanup, right on the beach on Broad St. It was beyond gross when the water was REALLY polluted then. You couldn't even get rid of the smell with air conditioning. It an experiance I would not like to relive.

Grew up in Lynn in the 50's and 60's. My current venue indicates a desire to get as far from Lynn as possible. Smell then was just as gross. Unfortunately, local politicians had other priorities than cleaning it up during the days of easy state and federal money, not to mention input from MIT. Indication of what the future holds is that current State Senator is Tom McGee JUNIOR, son of the former Speaker, whose record was er, "mixed". Next stink that will get attention was covered Tues. in the Patriot Ledger. MGL Chapter 40-A includes a "right to farm" provision that has placed pigs in a residential Scituate neighborhood. I learned this the hard way, when I recently had to move to escape 40-foot dumpsters filled with manure. I had been there 20 years when my new Duxbury neighbor, (call her "Paris"), decided to lead her version of "The Simple Life".
