Brodeur out at Dig

What to say about yesterday’s firing of Michael Brodeur as editor of the Weekly Dig? A few points are worth highlighting.

--Dig publisher Jeff Lawrence, who repurchased the paper from Metrocorp, Boston magazine’s parent company, back in May, apparently informed Brodeur he was out at the end of the day Tuesday, after this week’s Dig had shipped.

--Sources close to the paper tell Media Log that Brodeur wasn’t offered a chance to return to his old slot writing about arts and entertainment; instead, he was just axed.

--Word is that Lawrence has no immediate plans to appoint a new editor.

--Brodeur wasn’t Lawrence’s pick to begin with. He took over in February, when the paper was still a Metrocorp property. (Brodeur’s predecessor, Joe Keohane, is  now a staffer at Boston magazine.)

--Brodeur’s ouster doesn’t seem to be playing well internally.

--Brodeur’s name is still on the online masthead.

Also, one another alt-weekly departure of some note: the Village Voice has jettisoned managing editor Deborah Kolben (via Gawker).

This week's Dig unceremoniously dropped Mr. Brodeur from the masthead with no explanation, and was simply missing the weekly editor note, again with no explanation. Not sure what happened or the reasons, but I would have to say it is very poor form on the part of Jeff Lawrence to not offer some sort of comment, even a terse "Mr. Brodeur is perusing other interests" type message.
