City Hall saved?

Oddly, today's Globe story on Mayor Menino's interest in building a wind turbine on City Hall Plaza doesn't mention the mayor's interest in selling off City Hall and the plaza and moving city government to South Boston. But the two plans don't really seem compatible.

Time will tell, but this sure suggests that Menino's changed his mind. If so, maybe the fascinating current issue of Architecture Boston--which, among other things, looks at a bunch of fascinating possibilities for the building and the plaza--did the trick.

Funny story about City Hall. One time a while back my elderly parents came to visit for a week just a few months after I first moved to Boston. Although they had never visited here before; one weekday while I was working during the day; they decided to venture out on their own on the MBTA to explore the city. They got lost and wound up at government center. When they got upstairs at that T-Stop they went into the first building that they saw (City Hall, of course) to ask for directions. My ever-polite mom commented to the armed security guard stationed at the metal detector that the building was a nicest-looking prison she'd ever seen. The guard chuckled a little, covered his mouth and then said "I'm sorry..." and that it was actually Boston's City Hall where the mayor and the city's administrators all worked from. Without missing a beat my mom said "Oh that's ok, don't be sorry dearie - prison is a good place for them folks to be!"
