Bloggers > reporters?

Now, it's just one example, so no one should get too excited. (This means you, Bob.) But Slate's comparison of two conference calls recently held by would-be president Mike Huckabee--one for reporters, one for bloggers--makes the latter group look good. The former? Not so much.

Quick summary: "The reporters’ questions were much more concise and polished. But the bloggers’ questions were more substantive by a long shot." Read the rest here.

NOTE: The original title for this post was, inadvertently, a tad too close to the Slate item it discusses; hence my awkward use of a "greater-than" sign.

The Phoenix is to be complimented as the only daily place in Massachusetts for comments and discussions on the media.  Mr. Reilly has the responsibility to be the watchdog and whistleblower for the public. Reilly does his job well with professionalism, humor at times, cynicism when needed, and street talk occasionally.  The Phoenix must keep this institution alive.

The media downsizing, corporate takeovers, multi ownership of groups of newspapers, radio, and TV stations is resulting to new ways for the public to get their information.  I am saddened to witness this demise and the affect on investigative journalism of government, business, and labor.  Being a reporter in this climate or working in newsrooms offers no job security and a diminished career ladder to support oneself or family.  The internet has caused this marginalize of the traditional media.  Even Tom Brokaw, former NBC anchor last week talked about the demise of the print media in the next decade.  Newspapers, news carriers, and news stands could be relics.

I did not want to do blogging for such a long time and finally gave in.  Blogging gives an opportunity for those who lack resources and public relations abilities to be competitive by holding the highly financed Special Interests and those in Media accountable.  The absence of an adequately staffed and inquisitive media by use of blogging at least gives the unheard a forum not otherwise available.

Thanks for the kind words, John, but you forgot my old Phoenix colleague Dan Kennedy, who carries on his own media discussion at medianation.blogspot.com.
