Shorter Kevin Cullen column, w/ discussion question(s)

Column synopsis: John Gonzalez's recent critique of the Globe's metro columnists is worthless, because Gonzalez works at Boston magazine, which sucks.

Question: If Gonzalez's article is worthless, why not find something else to write about?

Bonus question: Since Brian McGrory, the former Globe metro columnist, considered leaving that job to become BoMag's editor before becoming the Globe's metro editor last year, might Cullen be underestimating BoMag's place on the local media totem pole?

The only evidence you provide that McGrory "considered" the Boston editorship is a link to one of your own posts that says he "spurned" the job. Those are two very different words. I don't know if he considered it (seriously), but you don't seem to either -- yet you seem to assert it as a fact.

Gonzalez aside, Cullen should love Boston magazine. It's full of drunken, nostalgic Irish cranks.

Funny that it should take a glossy broadside to goad him into writing with some fire, though.

BH, based on the reporting I did for that story, I'm comfortable with my use of both verbs. But if you have info that suggests otherwise, I'd love to hear it.

    Adam,

I also "considered" getting a new SUV because of all the discounts. After deliberation, it dawned on me that it would have been a stupid idea. Similarly, McGrory probably remembered that he needed to look at himself in the mirror to shave.

Boston Magazine is a sad excuse for a city publication. Not as snarky and provocative as, say, NY Magazine, not as relevant as, say, the Texas Monthly. I occasionally still get suckered into picking up BM and am always disappointed. Yes, Kevin C. sometimes also lets me down, as do many columnists (are you listening Maureen Dowd?) but at least he seems to have a beating heart. BM too often seems to be completely the sum and total of what the currently powerful group of advertisers need/demand at any one time.
