Conservatism with a pretty face

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was indeed impressive during her coming-out party yesterday, with her pleasant and slightly chirpy voice suggesting hints of middle America, a background further solidified by her now-famous record of PTA involvement, being a hockey mom, having a propensity for mooseburgers, and fighting for reform. As has been widely observed, John McCain's selection of Palin also helps to reaffirm his image as a maverick who has a few surprises up his sleeve.

And sure, Palin will appeal to some working class independents and others who might otherwise lean Democratic in November.

But all this talk about her supposedly taking a chunk of Clinton supporters with her seems wildly exagerrated, mostly because of Palin's profile as a pro-lifer who believes in creationism, is a skeptic on global warming, and who differs with McCain on the soundness of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (she's for it.)

Palin is a Republican with a capital R -- to the delight of conservatives. Yet although the GOP will push hard to narrow the gender gap, there remains a world of difference between the policy prescriptions favored by McCain's running mate and the woman who was almost the Democratic nominee.

If McCain was serious about winning, he'd have chosen a moderate who could peel off disaffected Hillary voters.

Does this pick bring home conservatives just in time for the election? Yes. (But they would've come home to McCain anyway). Does it bring in Hillary fans? No way.

The pick of Sarah Palin is primarily meant to appeal to middle america, rural voters, hunters, pro-lifers, religious voters, but especially, suburban working mothers. It is not meant to bring bra-burning radical feminazis to the GOP side. Woman make up more than half the electorate, and this is a way to try to get some more of them to vote Republican, to effectively neutralize the so-called "gender gap." The math is easy ... we don't need all of Hillary's supporters, we just need some.

Not all, and perhaps not even most, of Hillary's supporters are radical leftwingers, who love abortion and socialism like their own children. I know plenty of Hillary supporters (I'm a Republican from a Democrat family), who are not radicals in the least, but who were really thrilled by the prospect of getting a female in the White House. Now they have another choice.

Of course, the pick of Palin also completely solidifies the conservatives behind the GOP ticket. I've never seen this much excitement coming out of conservative circles, probably since Ronald Reagan was president.

I was so thrilled this weekend about it, I actually gave online to the RNC and the McCain campaign, for the first time since the Laffey-Chafee primary. Apparently, I'm not the only one, because they raised a ton of money very quickly this weekend. I heard they broke their own record.

PS I noticed a few prominent Democrats openly hoping for a distasterous hurricane Gustav this week to mess up the RNC. However, it looks like the GOP may have had their prayers answered first, as both the president and the vice-president will not be attending. Bobby Jindal has been very proactive, and I have a feeling that there is going to be a marked contrast with Katrina, which would actually help the GOP. Of course, we still need to hope that damage will be minimal.
