Grocery workers pushing union drive in Providence

From the United Food and Commercial Workers, regarding an event tomorrow:

Providence, R.I.—Members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW), grocery workers and community members will gather at the Providence PriceRite store on 325 Valley St., to hand flyers out to customers and speak with them about the need for good union jobs in this troubled economy. Workers will be available for media interviews between 11:30 a.m. and noon.

PriceRite is owned by the same company that owns and/or supplies ShopRite stores in Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, Connecticut, and New Jersey, where the vast majority of workers have a union—and benefits that make their grocery jobs the kind of good, middle-class jobs that strengthen communities and our economy.

What the heck do customers care whether their PriceRite employees are unionized?  PriceRite has really cheap groceries.  I would think that's the last thing their customers want is for PriceRite to have to pay more in wages and benefits and then hand that increase over to the customers.  Maybe then PriceRite starts charging Stop & Shop prices without the Stop & Shop quality.  Then what happens?  Oh yeah, PriceRite goes out of business and all those unionized workers are out of a job.  Good thinking.

How about Whole Foods? They are non-union,but as I understand it from someone who works there they get better pay and much better benefits and working conditions than union workers in other supermarkets.Would organizing that company have a better net effect on the employees?

Places like Price Rite and Savalot are dumps and I think some of the stuff they sell is substandard-they must run on very low overhead-not too many Volvos in the parking lot.More like Hyundais.

Aldi's is opening on Smith Street just before Oakland in the near future. They are cheap but not really low quality. Are they unionized?

    Just throwing questions here.
