Further cuts being mulled at the ProJo

The Providence Journal, which was hit last year by the departure of its longtime editor and by what were thought to be the paper's first-ever economic layoffs, is being considered for further cuts.

While rumors are rife about a possible announcement today, Tim Schick, administrator of the Providence Newspaper Guild, says he does not expect that to happen.

Schick says that the Dallas-based Belo Corporation, the ProJo's owner, is taking a look at staffing levels at some of its properties. While details are scant on which papers and which departments are under review, Schick says, ProJo managers have indicated that the Rhode Island daily is in the mix.

"If decisions are made, it could come down quickly," he says, "but nothing is anticipated this week."

As it stands, the earlier cuts, and previous downsizing, have sparked gripes about the increasing thinness of Rhode Island's statewide daily.
