Tomorrow: the Poverty Institute's budget conference

It is timely and all.

Tomorrow, over 200 Rhode Islanders, including local and state policymakers, representatives from nonprofit organizations, labor & religious groups, and Rhode Island citizens will attend the 2009 Budget Rhode Map.

The state budget is Rhode Island’s most important policy document, yet many Rhode Islanders are in the dark when it comes to how the budget is developed. The goal of the 2009 Budget Rhode Map conference is to bring members of our community together to educate them about the state’s finances and the budget process so that they can have a powerful voice in the debate over tax and spending priorities.

Scheduled presentations include:
• Understanding the budget deficit (approximate start time 9:15)
Russell Dannecker, Fiscal Policy Analyst, The Poverty Institute
• Tax policy options (approximate start time 10:10)
Gary Sasse, Director of the RI Department of Revenue
Jeff McLynch, Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy
• Trends in state spending on work support programs (approximate start time 11:25)
Linda Katz, Co-founder & Policy Director, The Poverty Institute
Rachel Flum, Policy Analyst, The Poverty Institute

The Poverty Institute will also celebrate its 10th Anniversary during the luncheon, with featured speaker M. Charles Bakst who will speak to “Stirring the conscience: Making the people’s voice heard at the State House.” (approximate start time 12:15)
