Health & Human Rights in 2009: Global Problems, Local Solutions
 
Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) is proud to host the only health professional and human rights-focused conference in the country. Students, health professionals and human rights activists will meet to discuss the critical health and human rights issues of today. More and more people are being denied the basic right to health because of societal problems that stem from a blatant disregard for human rights. Now is the time for the leaders and future leaders of the health profession to take a stand against these human rights violations.
 
WHEN: Registration begins at 8:00 am, Saturday, January 31, 2009

A Town Hall Meeting with U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse
After Guantánamo: Seeking Accountability for Detainee Abuse
 
Students will engage in a town hall meeting with Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) discussing ways to seek accountability for the use of torture in U.S. interrogation policies during the Bush administration. Sen. Whitehouse has worked extensively on the Senate Intelligence Committee to end the abuse of detainees in U.S. custody. Challenging the Bush administration’s use of torture has long been a core component of PHR’s work.
