First Quarter Fundraising

The leading gubernatorial candidates have submitted their first-quarter fundraising filings and as expected, General Treasurer Frank T. Caprio leads the Democratic field, with $1.2 million on hand to Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch's $500,000 and Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts' $300,000.

But if we already knew the big numbers, the details provide a glimpse into the candidates' pockets of support and early spending habits.

The Caprio campaign leaned heavily on lawyers, with attorneys from Providence firm Hinckley, Allen & Snyder ponying up considerable cash, and the construction industry, with employees of connected builder Gilbane, Inc. pouring in thousands. Expenditures included payments to fundraising maven Amy Gabarra and Washington-based fundraising consultant Berger Hirschberg Strategies.

Lynch drew on a mix of lawyers, businessmen and municipal employees for campaign cash. he bought fundraising software and made heavy layouts on food and entertainment for fundraising and schmoozing purposes - including some Red Sox tix.

Roberts, who worked in the health care industry before entering public life and has made health care a top priority as an elected official, drew heavily on the industry for donations. She also tapped Brown University and RISD employees and several non-profit types. Expenditures included food and beverages for fundraising events, payments to campaign director Seth Klaiman and fundraising technology.
