Ocean State Action Director Steps Down

Karen Malcolm, executive director of the labor-backed Ocean State Action advocacy group, is stepping down after seven years on staff. Peter Asen, a former journalist now on staff with Ocean State, will step in as interim director. From Malcolm's desk:

As our state and nation face these tumultuous times, there is also amazing opportunity for change and growth.  Ocean State Action has been a part of leading edge change for social justice since our founding 21 years ago and so, this is an exciting moment in history for our coalition.

One reason Ocean State Action remains on the cutting edge of change is our coalition’s commitment to building new leaders and providing them opportunities to bring fresh ideas and vision to the Progressive movement.  That’s why, after seven years on staff at Ocean State Action, I will be stepping down as Executive Director at the end of this month, opening the door to new and fresh leadership.

I’m honored to announce that Ocean State Action’s amazing, bright team of young but experienced leaders will be represented by Peter Asen as interim director, lead organizer Ivette Luna a leading “light” for change in Rhode Island, and Daniel Bass, organizer and strategist extraordinaire.  Together this team will continue their work to help stoke the flame of social, economic and environmental justice in our state.

Core to Ocean State Action’s values is a commitment to coalition and the belief that together we are greater together than the sum of our parts.  My own commitment to Ocean State Action, to Rhode Island, and to progressive change is strong, and my hope ever strengthening as I watch this team, and so many of you, contribute your passion, intellect and commitment to hard issues and even harder politics.

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve in my role at Ocean State Action and to participate in standing up together with you on behalf of equality, justice and freedom.
