Roberts, Above the Fold

Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts, gearing up for a gubernatorial run, gets above-the-fold treatment in today's ProJo after joining small business owners to protest proposed hikes in health insurance rates.

Couldn't have asked for anything more.

It's tough enough for any lieutenant governor to grab headlines. This piece does that and, to boot, touches on the three main talking points of the nascent Roberts campaign: I'm a health care expert, I know a lot about small business and, though I may be lieutenant guv, I'm doing something.

Roberts' credentials on health care are solid: she worked in the industry and built her career in the state senate around the issue. But with the economy shaping up as the dominant issue in the gubernatorial campaign, she needs to show some mastery of dollars and cents.

She's attempted to do that chairing the Small Business Advocacy Council, best known for a campaign urging Rhode Islanders to buy local. But that's not a terribly high-profile effort. The insurance issue allows her to speak out on a big economic issue, while playing to her natural strength in health care.
