Kilmartin Weighing AG, Mayoral Campaigns

Add another name to the list of potential candidates for Attorney General. State Rep. Peter F. Kilmartin (D-Pawtucket), a retired police officer-turned-lawyer, tells N4N that he is weighing a run for the state's top law enforcement post.

Kilmartin joins a list of potential contenders that includes, on the Democratic side, William Lynch, chairman of the Rhode Island Democratic Party, Joseph Fernandez, city solicitor for Providence, State Senator Paul Jabour (D-Providence), Bob Craven, a Providence lawyer, and Assistant Attorney General Stacey Pires Veroni, who is a candidate for a Superior Court judgeship.

Former Assistant Attorney General Erik Wallin and frequent candidate Bill Harsch are possible contenders on the Republican side.

Lynch, brother of current Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch, has deep roots in Pawtucket - his father was a long-time mayor of the city. And if he decides to run, Kilmartin will have to decide whether it is worth competing for the same base - though he tells N4N that Lynch's decision will not, in the end, dictate his own.

Another intriguing possibility for Kilmartin, a long-time legislator, is a run for mayor. Kilmartin said he expects Pawtucket Mayor James Doyle to retire at the end of his term. And the job, he said, has appealed to him since age 10.
