The Bi-Partisan Love-In

Who says the Dems and Republicans can't play together?

Governor Carcieri, if locked in a partisan battle over the budget, has had an extraordinary run of Democratic love in the last week or so. First, Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch sides with the guv on closing that pesky prostitution loophole. Then, the Democratic-dominated House Judiciary Committee approves his choice for Supreme Court chief justice with nary a peep o' dissent. And now, Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts - who has clashed with Carcieri of late over a state contract with a Medicaid consultant - finds herself siding with the big guy in defense of the health insurance commissioner, who is facing the budget axe.

Of course, you can bet reverance for the gubnah wasn't behind any of this - Lynch and Roberts are both burnishing their credentials in the run-up to a gubernatorial race (Lynch is the law-and-order guy, Roberts the health care expert). And, well, everyone seems to like Supreme Court Justice Paul A. Suttell, the governor's pick for chief justice.

But if you're a Repulican in lil' Rhody, you've gotta take it where you can get it.
