It is hard to believe that Depetro didn't know what his wife was doing,but just check this out:

There was an agent on my job whose wife was running a marriage fraud ring to obtain green cards for European women by setting up false marriages.The internal affairs vampires of course assumed the agent was in it up to his ears.Then they set up a wiretap on his phone(this was a few decades ago)and guess what?The wife was laughing about what a dumb shit she was married to in conversations with her co-conspirators-him being an INS agent and not having a clue what she was doing.The guy didn't get any commendations,but he was cleared of wrongdoing when she was arrested.

I'm not going to make a guess here.Depetro and his wife are the only ones that know for sure.
