Tote Board Column -- 5/24 -- The Long-Winded, Winding Road

    This week's Tote Board column looks back at the last few months and, amidst all the trivia being reported about Campaign 2008, attempts to pick out the three or four unexpected or significant trends that have emerged so far that are likely to remain important. Briefly they are:
  1. The continuing unpopularity of the Iraq War and President Bush;
  2. The rise of Mitt Romney;
  3. The rise and gaffe of John Edwards;
  4. The "waiting in the wings" candidacies of Fred Thompson and Newt Gingrich.
    For more, read the column here.

    The long-winded winding road may soon feature a few sharp and sudden jug-handle turns.

    ANTI-RUDY CATHOLICS PLAN THEIR ASSAULT

    Conservative groups are about to go viral with attacks on the pro-choice former mayor

    "More is afoot - not just from us, but others" - Joseph Cella, executive director of the conservative Catholic political-action committee Fidelis.

    Fidelis America will soon launch a concerted effort including a web-site, "issue-based opposition reseach and more traditional negative literature" in seeking to "...plant the seeds of doubt in the minds of conservative Catholic voters, particulary Reagan Democrats in key swing states like Wisconsin, Ohio and Pennsylvania." Their targeted voters are "(those} most expected to identify with, and be drawn to Mr. Giuliani's working-class Catholic roots . . . to peel off just enough votes to doom a Giuliani candidacy."

    Michigan-based Fidelis, tactfully tooled to avoid federal oversight, is modeled upon - but claims no direct organizational affiliation with - Catholics Against Kerry, a hard-hitting 2004 group.

    Steve Dillard of Catholics Against Rudy, based in Georgia and a separate anti-Giuliani group, states "It's not a vast right-wing conspiracy, but if you're active on these issues, you build up networks of people who share your concepts. . ."

    Whoosh!

    Willard Mitt Romney, a practicing Mormon, is well-advised to take notes.

    Sadly, the salmon-colored New York Observer - since September 11 - has been available locally through mail-order subscription or the web.  For those unfamiliar with the newspaper, it combines solid political reporting with entertainment news and the chattering classes in what's left of New York cafe society.  Contributors include Joe Conason along with Nicholas von Hoffman, Andrew Sarris, Rex Reed and Simon Doonan.
