President Bush Calls Proposed Senate Vote of "No Confidence" in Alberto Gonzales Meaningless -- And He's Right

President Bush has called today's proposed no confidence vote in Attorney General Alberto Gonzales "meaningless" -- and for once he's right. The first item in this blog back in February criticized Congress for taking illusory action on the war, so it's no surprise that Congress is taking the same sort of "non-action" on Gonzales.
The Constitution provides Congress with several ways to express its lack of support of Gonzales. It can attempt to impeach him. Or, it can cut off the money for his department until he leaves. But a vote of "no confidence" doesn't exist in our system, except for those taking the easy way out by attempting to look like they're doing something when they're really not.
This Congress is fast approaching the low approval numbers in the polls of the incumbent president. Moves like this help explain why.

Completely agree.  Congress can take the initiative in the steps you've noted.  To issue a vote of "no confidence" is to slap Gonzalez on the hands for acting as though Bush were still his client in Texas.

As your attached link references IMMIGRATION, allow me to take this opportunity to express my anger at how the immigration bill has produced Congressional and Presidential posturing and preening.  Scrutiny finds the immigration bill to be impractical and unenforceable - examples: how can 8-12 million illegal and undocumented  alients be expected to come forward, identify themselves  and state they've been here illegally the whole time; requiring illegals to pay back taxes on earned income  necessarily implies employers did wrong in their preparing and filing corporate tax returns; does anyone expect that a head of family will return to their country of origin and then pay a significant fee/fine when they, after a year's wait, apply for re-entry at the U.S. embassy; will employers electronically file SS numbers of all employees to some central reporting unit, etc.  Also, if the illegal aliens enter the workforce, they'll hopefully be paid real wages, rapidly resulting in higher consumer prices. The end-game will likely have a 350-700 mile border wall with Mexico, 8,000-18,000 new Border Security agents, high-publicity lightning scare raids such as the one in New Bedford and no meaningful reform.  As a first generation American who has friends and relatives undergoing the citizenship process, I'm personally outraged that both Bush and Congress are raising hopes and expectations that will ultimately be dashed and destroyed.

Closing on a positive note, great to see a reference to Daniel Boorstin's "The Image."  Still treasure my copy!
