Tote Board Column -- 6/14 -- Wishing For More Than A Wash

    This week's Tote Board column looks at how the early states could trip up the campaign of GOP front runner Rudy Giuliani and perhaps boost the campaign of Mitt Romney.

    (Small craft warning advisory.  Tried to log in at end of story and could not get space.)

    Anyhoo, now squinting into my cloudy, cracked crystal ball:

    Giuliani and McCain are not participating in the Iowa Straw Poll in August.  Have they all but forfeited the mid-January Iowa Caucus to Romney?

    Romney's Mormon faith.  "Presidential preference" often translates into voting your prejudices.  Voting and exit polling in the early primary states - especially South Carolina and Florida's panhandle and interior - may show the role of religious preference in 2008;

    Giuliani may finish strong in N.H.  The state is staunchly fiscally conservative and Rudy trumpets his fiscal restraint as NYC Mayor. N.H. has a libertarian-type spirit - "Live Free or Die" is the state motto. Rudy advocates right-of-choice and individual sexual preference - that is to say, keep the government out of people's private lives.  Gun control, though, could be an issue harmful to Rudy;

    Why, oh, Wyoming?  Wyoming's caucuses end on February 2, the date of the South Carolina primary. Curious to see if Wyoming gets lost in the South Carolina coverage, as you've indicated, or a surprise winner in Wyoming is used to counter the South Carolina outcome.

    MAY I MOVE FROM ELEPHANT WALK TO DONKEY SERENADE?

    Speaking of primaries, where will the Anti-Hillary vote take place? Will the Anti-Hillary Democrat and Independent voter wait until Nov. '08 when her name appears on the ballot as the Democratic Party nominee?  Not very likely they'll wait that long.

    Hanging The Wash Out To Dry - "twisting slowly, slowly in the wind" - Milhous

    Fred Thompson wishes he were the only Thompson in the race

    Tommy Thompson wishes he were the only Thompson in the race

    John McCain wishes he could return to the 2000 Straight Talk Express having known then what he knows now

    Some voters may wish Rudy Giuliani were only married once and preferably not to his second cousin

    Some voters may wish Willard Mitt Romney were Mitt W. Romney and a born-n-bred lifelong Protestant

    Some hard-line conservative voters may wish Sam Brownback had a different last name

    Some voters may wish Ron Paul would return to the Libertarian Party

    Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, James Gilmore and Tom Tancredo most certainly wish their post-debate press coverage was equal to their on-air TV debate coverage

    (Thunk twice 'bout some of these but isn't this a free country?  Hey, at least the price is right.)
