Last Night's Debate: The "Experts" Weigh In

Real Clear Politics has a good summary of the debate reaction. And that reaction pretty much fits the pattern of the previous debates. The "experts" give it to Hillary, with Obama a close second, and Richardson unimpressive as usual.
What's disturbing in all this is that one senses these "judges" are mailing in the scorecards. The press generally wants a two-person race so it's going to make the debates conform to that, reality be damned. The truth is we think Edwards has put in some pretty good performances and Joe Biden hasn't been bad either. But saying that would destroy the symmetry that the race demands.
By the way, we still think Deval was the most impressive.

So-o-o-o-o-o, finally a debate for the rest of us.  Listened to it live on WBUR and watched it from 2:30 a.m. on Channel 2.  Radio was a trip in trying to connect the voices to the candidates (no announcer voice-over as to who was speaking).  Hillary won the debate on radio, responding to the questions as asked in the assigned time frame. Yet, Hillary spoke not with compassion but with conviction.  She is resolute. John Edwards won on tv with his relaxed, conversational manner, expanding the framework of the question to fit his responses.  Barack Obama, on radio - in my opinion - was disappointing as he sounded academic and tutorial.  On tv, though, Obama showed he's completely aware of his surroundings as he moved from looking at the questioning panelist, then to the audience left, right and at home while alternating his body positioning and hand gestures.  An impressive tv appearance but too many generalities!  Agree that Richardson's appearance and responses did not equal his resume.  Biden was a delightful surprise as he spoke with clarity and  certainty.  Dodd wandered and went on too long.  Gravel and Kucinich served as opposite ends of the balance beam for the other candidates.

Yet, had the impression that these candidates were on their best behavior without critiquing one another. Heard "I agree with everything said" from more than one speaker.  Was it Biden who thanked Bush for something or other?

Bottom line (literally): not really a debate but 8 separated platforms from which to address the audience individually with virtually no direct reference to the other candidates.
