Good News for Democrats: Alan Keyes Considering GOP Run for President

In a move certain to cheer any Democrat, Alan Keyes is thinking about entering the GOP race, according to this dispatch. It would be his third run for the presidency,
What would the diminutive right wing Mr, Keyes, an African-American, bring to the race? Well, he is a good debater. And he's always good for the pithy quote or political statement. When he ran against Barack Obama for the Senate in 2004 he remarked that Jesus wouldn't vote for Obama. During the 1996 presidential primaries, he was briefly detained by Atlanta police when he tried to crash a debate that had tried to exclude him. The highlight of his political career (at least according to us) was in 2000 when he jumped into a mosh pit at the urging of his daughter.
Though he never won a primary or caucus, he did get as high as 21% in a multi-candidate GOP primary field in Utah in 2000. However, as a last-minute GOP candidate drafted into the Illinois Senate contest against Obama in 2004 (the nominated candidate withdrew due to a sex scandal), he received only 27% of the vote -- an astoundingly awful showing.

What Alan Keyes brings to the race is an opportunity for a Republican presidential candidate to freely and openly criticize Sen. Barack Obama without being called a "racist."  Obama and Keyes are both Black Americans and Keyes, as noted, ran against Obama in '04 for the Illinois Senate seat.  Keyes' dismal showing may be due, in part, to his having been a Maryland resident.  Dr. Keyes (another Harvard man!) may use his foreign policy  experience and staunchly conservative moral views to trash and bash Barack, perhaps drawing on the 2004 Senate campaign for inspiration.

The Republicans can't figure out how to run against a Black American candidate.
