Check out Adam Reilly's Piece in this Week's Phoenix

We're a bit late getting to this but Adam Reilly offers a very useful look this week in the Phoenix at 3 pop culture developments that could affect the Romney campaign.
We've long felt that over time, Romney's religion would end up becoming a big plus for his campaign, not a minus. JFK in 1960 ended up benefiting greatly from the intense support of fellow Catholics who more than offset any lost support among those disinclined to support a member of his religious faith. We think ultimately that will be the electoral verdict on Romney's religion too. But it's not a foregone conclusion.

    Commenting on Jon Keller's opinion . . .

In addition to Governor Patrick, Edward W. Brooke III, a Republican, was the nation's first popularly elected African-American United States Senator.  He represented Massachusetts from 1967-79 and was state Attorney General from 1963-67 (state offices were then 2 years so Brooke was elected and re-elected).

Ralph Martin became the first African-American to be elected District Attorney of Suffolk County (Boston) in the late 1980s.

Have to note that the number of registered Catholic voters

in 1960 would have been far, far greater than the number of registered Mormon voters in 2008.

Is the "Bluest" state also the "Black and Blue" State thanks to Jon Keller's punchy prose?

    ROMNEY'S COMPLEX EDIFICE

Those travelling along Exit 58 on Route 2 can't help but notice a Mormon temple that was  built mostly through the efforts of Belmont resident Willard Mitt Romney, then a private citizen and thus out of the public eye.  Construction was completed in 1999. Romney was instrumental in fiercely fighting Belmont officials for local approval and took on a tough state zoning regulations to give the temple a steeple.  Additionally, the temple abuts Route 2 and questions were then

raised about public land being privatized by then-Republican governors to accommodate the Mormon church.

Those interested may type in "atheists.org/.../rlpay7.htm".  The official Mormon website mentions Romney showing the site to Sen. Kennedy in 1995. Possibly a good term paper

topic for a returning PoliSci type because the structure is clearly visible and transactions were conducted in the public sector so info would be readily available.

A story that will likely be told as the general election draws near.
