Giuliani's "Firewall" May Not Be Enough

Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post has gotten hold of an internal Rudy Giuliani campaign memo that describes the January 29th primary in Florida as his "firewall."
That may not be enough. If Giuliani does poorly in the first three contests in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina, it's highly questionable that his current strong support in Florida will hold. That's always been the main hurdle facing his campaign and it's why he'd be much better off picking one of those first three states and throwing a lot of money and organization at them.
This is good news for Romney, who may be emerging as his principal opponent.

Who's the optimist and who's the pessimist?  Rudy's guys - in the linked story - see the early primary states as "firewalls".  One may say that Mitt sees them as "dominoes."

A sports analogy seems to describe the 2008 primary process with the early primaries being "preliminaries" or first and second elimination rounds in a Bowl Championship Series.  February 5 could resemble the New Year's Day bowl games.  If clear winners do not then emerge, later primaries serve to yield overtime victories for the top finalists while the rest see the later primaries as a consolation round.
