This week's column, a wrap-up of the Democratic race, concludes that Barack Obama is still the figure to watch in the Democratic race.

For Barack Obama, 2008 is a "win-win" as he has everything to gain and nothing to lose (his Illinois U.S. Senate seat, for example, is not up until 2010.)  Barack is significantly contributing to long-term Democratic Party prospects.  He continues to be instrumental in encouraging young people and those who felt left out to participate in the political party process.  His efforts at political inclusion and empowerment resemble those of Sen. Eugene McCarthy in 1968.  Additionally, his candidacy enables other persons of color to seriously consider seeking high elective office.  Also, the '08 campaign lets him examine an issue that will never go away:  race.  He's able to plumb the depths of racism in the electorate; determine its whereabouts, shape, force and focus; and strategize his present and future presidential campaigns accordingly.  Highly-educated, non-confrontational, well spoken, personally prudent and socially correct, Barack Obama represents the white man's version of what the black politician should be like.

Hillary Clinton.  The Republicans would dearly love the 2008 campaign to be a referendum on Hillary Clinton and - by extension - the less attractive aspects of Bill Clinton's presidency.  Yet, one must be very careful in  attacking and critiquing a female candidate.  Example: in the 2006 Massachusetts gubernatorial contest, independent candidate Christy Mihos used televised debates to severely and relentlessly criticize and fault a female candidate, Republican Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey.  While Mihos effectively damaged Healey, his own campaign - a real long-shot at best - was in ruins and he disgraced.  Deval Patrick, the Democratic nominee and eventual winner, in effect let Mihos do his dirty work for him in the "let's you and him fight" debate maneuvers.  Curious to see how the Republican attack machines handle Hillary should she be the nominee.  To borrow your closing Obama line, no one should underestimate them - or her!

John Edwards is a member of the "woulda-coulda-shoulda" club.  Had he run and won re-election to his North Carolina U.S. Senate seat in '04 (the N.C. state constitution let him run for V.P. - a federal election - while also running for U.S. Senate - a state election) he'd now likely be the front-runner.  Yet, the man smacks of insincerity when advocating for the down-trodden.  He has attacked sub-prime mortgage lenders who lend money to those in poor communities.  He is, however, heavily invested in the Fortress Investment Group, a financial hedge fund that has foreclosed on dozens of homes owned in New Orleans by poor Hurricane Katrina victims.  The man is a clear-complexioned, bright-eyed, well-coiffed two-faced fraud.

Joe Biden withdrew from the 1988 presidential primary subsequent to his failure - on one televised occasion -  in attributing a quote to British politian Neil Kinnock.  Neil Who??  An orator like Churchill was he?  The Dukakis campaign used that singular oversight to help hasten Biden's departure.  Biden is the long-distance runner who wants to use the 2008 presidential primary - the 20th anniversary of his prior campaign - to honorably complete the race he had formerly quit under a cloud.  Perhaps a "victory lap" for his many years of service.  Give him a gold watch.

Mike Gravel may be the only one among the aspiring and perspiring presidential wannabes who speaks with real emotion and conviction.  What's he doing up there?

The summer that I learned how to be a woman was the summer that my life changed. My name is Nickie and I was only 14 years old. I've always been the tomboy-ish kind of girl and never believed I was beautiful. I was always felt that nobody would be able to understand my family problems. You see, I'm the youngest of eight children. After my father died when I was only 9, my mother hooked up with Lucas Monteau(not his real last name but it starts with a M). When Lucas couldn’t give her the sons she wanted, she adopted them. My mother only had girls(5 to be exact).
