Will Teddy Endorse Dodd and Would It Produce a Dodd Boomlet?

Marc Ambinder has an interesting item over at his blog, speculating on the possibility that Ted Kennedy might end up endorsing Chris Dodd.
As we've said before, endorsements don't mean much but if Kennedy and other members of the family were willing to campaign for Dodd in Iowa and New Hampshire, he might get a little something going. As we noted earlier in the week, Dodd was outstanding in the debate this week (not that anyone in the press seemed to notice); he's run a decent campaign, and he's up today with two new ads in Iowa -- one that goes after Clinton and another after Edwards.
Still, Dodd has a long way to go to get into the top three in Iowa -- which is where he'd have to be to survive into New Hampshire. But if he surges at all, the effect will be to divide further the anti-Clinton vote -- which would be good news for her.

In addition to a Dodd boomlet, Senator Kennedy's endorsement - along with those of his family members - may produce a JFK boomlet.  The '08 Democratic candidates use the Clinton presidency as a touchstone for their statements.  My campaign-sleepy ears and tired eyes have yet to hear or see any meaningful mention of President Kennedy in the debates or the candidates' many  speeches.  Could be that Teddy is looking to remind today's aspiring and perspiring presidential wannabes of President Kennedy's legacy.  Teddy may also be looking to have himself involved in the present proceedings.  The legendary liberal lion (not 'progressive', thank you) has fought many battles over many years over issues relevant to the current Democratic agenda.  Curious to see if Sen. Dodd invokes the Kennedys in any upcoming debate.

Ironically, Bill Clinton had no problem frequently showing film footage of his having met President Kennedy in 1963 when he was a member of Boys' Nation.

Recently, The New Republic featured an article where Theodore C. Sorenson, Special Counsel to President Kennedy, endorsed Barack Obama.  Sorenson likened the spirit and temper of the Obama '08 phenomenon to that of JFK in the late 1950s when he initiated his presidential quest with Sorenson at his side.  Re-reading the article, though, one finds much commentary on Kennedy but very little on Obama.  Sen. Kennedy may have been inspired by the Sorenson article to take a similair tack in introducing the Kennedy legacy into the dialogue.

Anyhoo, an endorsement is only as effective as its marketing technique.  We'll soon see if Teddy appears in Dodd's TV ads, campaigns personally for him in NH and elsewhere and so on.
