Reading your article made me go from scratchin' my skull to nodding my head 'yes.'  As I'm cable-less, wouldn't know Lou Dobbs from Fred C. Dobbs (Bogey's character in The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre).  Notion nags that third-party candidates are spoilers, not winners.  Henry Ross Perot's 18% popular vote was taken mostly from George H. W. Bush in 1992, enabling Clinton to emerge as what The New York Times called "The 43% President" (Clinton's popular vote share).  Ralph Nader still gives Democrats migraines from the 2000 Florida butterfly ballot battles that eventually had Bush win.  Agree with your savvy insight that, should the nominating process end early, the press has an open calendar. As each and every leading candidate has strong negative characteristics - we've been there - the post-February 5 'national primary' leaders would do well to mend fences and build bridges while taking the edge off their negative features.

BTW . . . while William Jennings Bryan was a progressive he was twice the Democratic Party presidential nominee in

the 1890s. A third-party progressive would be Teddy Roosevelt who formed the Progressive Party (The 'Bull Moose' Party) in 1912.  Teddy's third party effort that year helped elect Woodrow Wilson, a Democrat . . . Bloomberg another John Anderson?  Outta the park, kid-o, and take your home run trot around the bases while the crowd yells out for more!
