Bob Novak's Defense of His Column Claiming the Clinton Forces Have Scandalous Information About Obama But Aren't Using It

We wrote Saturday about  Robert Novak's column that the Clinton forces have scandalous information about Barack Obama and have decided not to use it. A big mystery, we suggested, is why the story would come out now -- given that its timing actually hurts Clinton.
An interview with Novak this morning on Fox News defending the column may explain this "mystery." Novak says his sources were prominent neutral Democrats, who had been told this information by someone involved in the Clinton campaign. So here's a guess: When the Clinton forces started panicking after her poor debate performance at the end of October, someone went to some prominent Democrats and started mentioning they had this information.
Given all this, it certainly doesn't make the Clinton campaign look particularly good (even Novak called it Nixonian) and it certainly makes their denial Saturday they had anything to do with this sound a bit hollow. The guess here is that the Novak interview today allows the story to persist, if only because Obama may sense an opening and keep pushing the dirty campaigning angle as he did Saturday.

    The turkeys are here already!

Highly unlikely that Clinton's disciplined organization would hit panic mode and start spreading stories.  The schoolgirl description that she's got a secret but she won't tell doesn't fit as Hillary is more mannish and bold than Obama and Edwards combined.  Also, she'd benefit from Obama's support were she the nominee and would have to mend fences were she to advance without his support.  Obama blithely asserts that he's doin' what he's doin' to "inoculate" himself (related link) against future attacks. Wrong. He's risen to the bait.  Oceans of bottom-fishing expeditions are ahead.  He may, though, use such attacks as a way to gather his supporters even closer to him.

Prefer your previous analysis that the stories were planted and hurt both Clinton and Obama.  Looks like a "divide-and-conquer" weed planting from an outside agitator - necessarily, as there aren't too many inside agitators.

Hillary Clinton's vulnerability, in addition to her being the first serious woman candidate, has her serving as surrogate target for hubby Bill.  The more he campaigns for her, while the applause meter goes up among their  supporters, the more the blood boils among their enemies.

She's becoming the candidate you love to hate and hate to love.

Barack Obama's vulnerability, in addition to his being the first serious African-American candidate, is his not being well-known to the general public.  His biographies are not required reading and information - whether fair or foul - fills a vacuum.  Yet, as a Harvard Law School grad, he's likely familiar with the legal phrase, "presuming a fact not in evidence."  For us lesser worthies, means acting on an assumption you think is true even though there's nothing to indicate it's even there in the first place. Yup, that's what he's doing by treating Novak's paper tiger as though it were scriven in stone.  Obama may be using this issue as an opportunity to become the "un-Hillary" candidate - the gathering spot for good Democrats who don't like Hillary - thereby elbowing Edwards aside as his competitor.  Also, he can easily play "victim" and keep those campaign contributions coming in each reporting period.

So-o-o-o-o, racism and sexism finally enter the arena. Only question is, why did it take so long?
