Thompson Latest Candidate to Move Essentially His Whole Effort to Iowa, Indicating He's in Big Trouble

Marc Ambinder is reporting that Fred Thompson, following in the footsteps of several second-tier Democrats, is moving virtually his entire effort to Iowa next week. This is obviously not a good sign for his campaign.
With Mike Huckabee moving into a clear lead in Iowa, it's pretty apparent that it's Huckabee who's executing the strategy of locking up the conservatives in the party that Thompson had hoped to carry out. If Huckabee wins Iowa, Thompson is virtually finished. So, Thompson is headed to the Hawkeye State -- not so much to win it -- but to try to go after Huckabee and hand the state back to Romney, thereby preserving his own viability down the line.
To do that, he'll have to go very negative against Huckabee. In the long run, that's not good for his campaign either.

While elimination rounds make for sequential speculation, a candidate who falls behind in one or more states may come back and do a whole lot better in or more other states.  The GOP "winner take all" practice of allocating primary delegates requires a candidate to run the early table to emerge as a front runner by the February 5 primaries.  Romney's campaign looks geared to win the four major early states one after another.  Possible that out of the GOP's eight primaries/caucuses (Iowa, N.H., Wyoming, Michigan, Nevada, S.C., Florida and Maine), several leading candidates may emerge.  An earlier Toteboard topic is about second choices becoming made in the Iowa caucuses when candidates fail to meet a threshold.  If the early primaries is a series of elimination rounds, then the second choices of an eliminated candidate in the remaining primary states is most important.

Anyhoo, my favorite domino theory is the music of Antoine Dominique "Fats" Domino.
