McCain Edges Romney in Florida GOP Primary -- But Giuliani's Campaign Is Over and That Helps McCain Even More Than the Ultimate Result

John McCain has apparently eked out a narrow victory over Mitt Romney. But the real story is that with Rudy Giuliani now likely out of the race with a distant third place finish, McCain is the likely beneficiary of the bulk of his support -- at least in the northeast (NJ, Ct., and NY), which next week could deliver McCain almost 20% of the delegates needed to nominate. That's a huge plus for McCain, bigger, perhaps, than the ultimate result tonight.
McCain is now the man to catch for the GOP nomination.

McCain's victories in states that he lost decisively in 2000 - South Carolina and Florida - are clear indicators that the conservative wing of the Republican Party is now more interested in winning the November election than in preserving the Goldwater legacy.  McCain, with Giuliani out, is the only Republican candidate with cross-over appeal to Democrats and Independents.  Have to wonder how many GOP primary voters have became afflicted with "buyer's remorse" since the 2000 election.  They then  bought into Bush's "compassionate conservative" rhetoric, perhaps hoping the son would be at least the equal of the father.  When Clinton left office in January 2001, the nation was at peace and there was a surplus in the federal budget. Currently, we are sandbagged in a dubiously justified war that has claimed nearly 4,000 American lives and thousands more with permanent disabilities, a deficit-riddled federal budget, a tottering domestic economy and a president whose approval ratings continue tanking.  Would believe that GOP primary voters have alleviated their residual 2000 guilt by finally voting for - not against - McCain.
