Preview of Tonight's Key Democratic Debate

We reviewed the high stakes for tonight's debate yesterday in a post. To repeat what we said there:

"Obama, who's closer behind [than Romney is to McCain], simply has to outshine Hillary -- much the same way JFK did against Nixon (again easier said than done) -- by making the choice a clear one between the future and the past. His problem all along in debates has been that while he's quite good at firing up a hall, in debates he tends to lose concentration. A debate is kind of like a job interview, and there's a way in which the more self-deprecating Obama seems to have trouble taking it all seriously.
If that's his attitude tomorrow, he can forget it. He's close enough behind that if he does as well as Hillary or even a bit better, the new voters who are watching him will be impressed. But she's unlikely to make it easy for him. She's know what's at stake too and will be well-rehearsed and prepared.
The hunch here is that with only the two of them on stage, the dynamic will be different than in the previous Democratic debates. How, of course, we'll find out tonight."

You're right.  While I've been able to see only one or two debates and have heard more on radio, Barack disappoints.  He projects little of the energy, spirit and enthusiasm that one would expect from a person deemed "charismatic."  He meanders and has no signature moves - such as JFK initiating the "hand chop" now used by so many.  And he meanders with a dull speaking voice, no less.  Don't know his height but he doesn't "stand tall."  H. Ross Perot was about 5'6" but was able to project a much larger look.  Interesting to see if those two have a debate with each other with us listening in or if they address the audience directly and barely acknowledge one another.  Dubbed chilly, formal and distant by virtually all accounts, the close quarters permit Hillary to have a "heart-to-heart" conversation with the viewer and audience. Is she as charming and pleasant up-close-and-personal as some loyal fans say? Still recall the close of Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential nomination acceptance speech when he said, "I believe in a place called Hope."  Damn near came through the TV and into my living room.  Saw an old Sinatra tape on TV once.  He looked live and in person.  How do they do that??????
