Romney Is Dropping Out -- Don't Count Out Huckabee In Future Primaries

It's being reported that Mitt Romney is dropping his presidential bid. That leaves McCain, Huckabee, and Paul -- and Huckabee is an attractive enough candidate that he could cause a few problems for McCain in future states, though not enough to derail his likely nomination.

Huh? What? Who?  If true, irony is that Romney would have been the Republican best able to challenge either Hillary or Barack this November.  Four-and-a-half reasons: (1) he gets the white male vote; (2)solid backing from corporate America. Business - from multi-national to street corner start-up - and business-affiliated voters regardless of age, gender or race - would line up behind the first successful businessman-candidate since - as the Toteboard has noted - Wendell Willkie in 1940; (2-a) the economy rising as a voter concern.  A tailor-made topic for Romney, a successful CEO; (3) Romney won the Mass. governorship in 2002 with strong support from the independent suburban voters.  Suburbanites readily identify with Romney who - if anything - would serve as their successful role model;  (4) intangibles and abstractions. Romney looks presidential . . . while rooted in 2008, he evokes images of the 1950s, an era of confidence and optimism . . . Romney would ask little of the citizen.  Hillary and Barack would want citizens to somehow participate in making things better (I have no problem with that but many do).  Romney's attitude would be "You've elected me to do the job. I'd rather you spend your time and energies on your job, your family and your community."

A possible withdrawal from a candidate who just pledged a fight to the convention floor?  May as well predict the Giants will beat the Patriots by 3 points!  You can't be serious!!

Turns out Wily Willard has only "suspended" his campaign and will not release his 133 or so trophies - er, delegates - nor pledge them to either of the two lesser worthies who dare stand in his primrose path.  An ultimate "flip flop" from the gladiator attitude of Wednesday when he pledged a fight to the finish.  Had the voting pattern extended over the next several states, Romney would have continued fighting with Huckabee on the right fringe while McCain easily scored from across the board.  Kinda like John Edwards having waited for either Hillary or Barack to stumble so he could move up and in.  More'n likely, Wily Willard is taking an extended time-out and may re-entry the fray at the drop of a chopped off head.  Could be awaiting a train wreck when McCain's Straight Talk Express collides head-on with Huckabee's train-of-thought.  Or Huckabee to be so thoroughly "yuk" that replacements(like himself) are called for.  He's not stepped out of it, he's just momentarily stepped to the side, awaiting further developments.  Beee-sides, he's sunk in $35 or $40 Million in ill-gotten loot from daddy's gas guzzlers and his own cut-throat ventures.  Romney wants a Return On Investment, not a tax write-off.
