Did Obama's Speech Have Legs Redux? Apparently Not

Two days ago we asked if Barack Obama's acceptance speech had legs, as we expressed skepticism that the speech was nearly as good as the critical reaction. The immediate answer to our question is, apparently not. The tracking polls moved during the convention a bit, but not after "the speech." It may be that the reaction to the Sarah Palin choice took the wind out of the Democrats' momentum.

But the likelier explanation is that while Obama's super-partisan speech appealed to Democrats at home and in the audience, it didn't fare nearly as well among independents and Republicans, despite the record viewing numbers (38 miliion).

Barack Obama runs the risk of creating a chasm between his rhetoric and his now more specific policies as representing the "hope" and "change" which has defined his campaign.  He invested several months in calling for "change" without getting all that specific.  What happened is that many in the audience began to imagine what kind of changes would be coming in an Obama administration.  Many crafted their own personal desires of what should be done and projected them onto Obama.  His acceptance speech may be interpreted as a call more for adjustments, alterations and innovations within the existing system than for the wholesale changes many of his followers had come to expect.  While not necessarily thinking outside the box, he nonetheless creatively expanded the dimensions of the box.

Barack Obama is nothing more and nothing less than a great man who can think critically and compassionately about domestic and world affairs--unless you include the nerve that got him the Democratic nomination against prohibitive odds; and will continue to get him and us moral and ethical victories as he defeats McCain and becomes the great reformer that Joe Lieberman says we need, rising above party differences in a way, ironically, that Lieberman's own candidate wants to but can't.
