The GOP Convention is Off for Monday -- Which Isn't That Bad A Thing for McCain

Understandably, given the enormous hurricane about to hit the Gulf coast, the Republicans made the right move -- both substantively and politically -- to call off Monday's night's proceedings. The truth is the party will gain more from appearing to be above politics at this time of crisis.

In fact, though no one planned it this way, the week could turn out even better politically for the GOP than planned. Remember we recommended in our Tote Board column on Thursday that the best thing the Republicans could do this week would be to act positive and above politics. Gustav may give them the chance -- as well as a kind of Katrina do-over. And they'll still get to reintroduce John McCain and Sarah Palin to the nation -- if not from Minnesota, then maybe from the Gulf.

That great gust of wind coming out of the Great Lakes region was the sigh of relief from the GOP when notified that Bush and Cheney were not going to attend.

Interesting that the convention site had been advertised the whole time as being Minneapolis when it turns out to be St. Paul.  Not to be terribly catty, but were they concerned about including the word "Saint" in their announcements?

Would the GOP's "religious right" wing have been  implicated?

Seems that years ago the N.H., South Carolina, Florida and Michigan delegations had the number of assigned delegates cut in half by the GOP as they dared to hold their primaries before Super Tuesday. The Democrats initially denied any delegates at all to their Florida and Michigan state parties, though they later compromised. The Democrats, last week in Denver, fully reinstated their Michigan and Florida delegations to full strength and gave those two delegations great seating on the floor.  Have read that the Republicans will not reinstate their four respective delegations to full strength but will keep them at the reduced number.  Elephants never forget, I guess.
