Yoon Is Running For Mayor

At-large city councilor Sam Yoon is running for mayor of Boston, he told the Phoenix this afternoon.

Yoon spent this weekend in retreat with his wife to make the final decision, as this blog was the first to report. Having decided in the affirmative, he spoke with Mayor Tom Menino and fellow councilor and mayoral candidate Michael Flaherty to inform them of his decision.

A formal announcement will come later, "in the next few weeks," Yoon said.

"The campaign will be about the future -- looking to the future of the city, and not to the past," Yoon said. At least for the next nine months, the city's future looks pretty interesting, with both Yoon and Flaherty, as well as businessman Kevin McCrea, running for the top job; Menino has not yet declared his intentions, but is widely expected to seek re-election.

This should be an exciting race; I think Yoon has a good head on his shoulders and his heart is in the right place. Somebody needs to bring some transparency to city government.

With these guys out, I giving Doug Bennett a bullet vote to help elect him to the City Council.  Bennett's working hard.  He came to my house last week, my mother's home a month ago, and my sister's last summer.  When I drive around Boston, I see a lot of Bennett signs all in store windows across the city.

Any thoughts if one or more of the district councillors will enter the at-large race? I imagine Tobin and Consalvo are the most interested and possibly the best positioned to do so. Tobin has some city-wide name recognition from his education work and comes from voter-rich Westie (w/ a decent JP base) and Consalvo would get a lot of votes from Ward 18, has a good reputation for working hard on policy and constituent issues, and most likely would have the Mayor's support.

This will be a good race - let's hope that the voters who came out for change candidates recently in Boston will do it again. Sam Yoon is a good candidate to move Boston forward.

southie fred/doug here's me paraphrasing you

"vote for Bennett he knocks on a lot of doors and has signs in businesses"

hahahahaha it doesnt work that way with us voters who like to think. Sure its nice that he's done it but there's more to it then that... besides are you saying that if any of the other candidates knock on all your family members doors and put signs in businesses then you will no longer bullet for Yourself/Bennet? hahaha....

Im happy Yoon's in, like I said before gonna be great year if you're into Boston politics.

The best, hardest working Councilors, Ross, Consalvo, Tobin, etc, will wait for 4 years down the road, no reason to run city-wide as it has not proven to be a springboard generally, except for Ray Flynn who worked a lot harder in the neighborhoods and had a record to run on. Flynn, like Patrick and Obama was running for an open seat

I think this is great news.  Councilor Yoon will have an uphill battle, to be sure, but it's about time for a fresh approach.  Voters and volunteers are still energized from the presidential election... the Yoon campaign would be wise to try to tap into that and get the Obama supporters on board (he was, as I recall, an early Obama supporter).  I'm really looking forward to the debate in the coming months!

SouthieFred, your comments look very similar to the "Dan Patrick" who posted on UHub. Hmm. That UHub poster wrote almost the same thing yet claimed to live in East Boston...

It is about time, the citizens of Boston experience a real race for the Mayoral seat. I am sure something good is bound to come out of it either way. It will encourage the current administration to look inward and try to correct the wrongs while making real plans to address the future needs of this city.

I think Councilor Yoon is a very articulate, and smart politician. As such, I am confident he is will bring new perspectives and new ideas to help us solve our economic problems and lead Boston into a new direction.

I have been a resident of Boston for over 30years, and I am confidant Councilor Yoon will be good for Boston.

I know Councilor Yoon has the vision and knowledge to carry this city into one that will be modeled by others. It will take ALL of us, and everyone we talk to, to get him there! Now, let's get to work people. This is going to be the greatest thing to happen to this city in YEARS! I have lived here my entire 50+ yrs. If you have ever had the opportunity to speak with Councilor Yoon, you can FEEL his sincerity. If your still in doubt, look at all he has been able to accomplish as City Councilor. Samyoon.com  I'm with him every step of the way!
