Kerner revels openly in his own multiplicity, and his scenes with Blair, still and on a bench at the zoo, are marvelous: Delamater's scientist glories in how, like perfect squares, we have both a positive and a negative root. In the men's stillness and unlikely, temporary, imperfect communion, the very prospect quivers in the air, at once beautiful, treacherous, and exhilarating.
