Mrs. Mortimer considers America no better as a vacation destination. New Orleans is “gay” but “ungodly.” Washington is “desolate.” And, on the whole, American children “are brought up in a very unwholesome manner.” But then, Mrs. Mortimer can’t recommend staying at home either. The English are “not very pleasant in company, because they do not like strangers . . . and are apt to grumble.” Better to be in Wales, where “there are not nearly as many thieves.”
