Former company member Mark Harootian returns with his 2008 "Identity," set to Tool's "Parabol" and "Lateralus." With eight dancers, featuring Elizabeth Mochizuki and Ilya Burov as soloists, this piece looks at how we recognize who we are: through the people we love, the friends who push and pull at us to be different, even strangers we meet on the street. Harootian also uses sharp angles and unusual stances to convey difficult human interactions.
Amherst-based choreographer Thomas Vacanti's "Enroulement," set to a Kevin Volans composition, means a "curling" or "unwinding," which establishes the canon-like movements of the four dancers, as they weave in and out among each other. Hands are flourished, arms are swept out, steps follow the music tightly, with only an occasional half-hip swivel by the two women.
Up Close On Hope always leaves audience members in awe of the dancers' strength, the choreographers' creativity, and the artistic expression that emerges from those collaborations.
