Unsettling slices of life

By BILL RODRIGUEZ  |  June 11, 2013

That’s when we learn that Bob fell down the stairs when he was three. Their mother always believed it was that moment of carelessness that caused her son’s condition. (But he didn’t cry after falling, which indicates to us that he may not have hit his head very hard. Poor mom.)

The weak moments in BOB have to do with our being given too much information, usually in the form of a scene that’s acted out rather than merely referred to. (How interesting could a kids’ skit for grown-ups be if you’re not a doting family member?)

Fortunately, it’s not all doom and gloom. Eventually Bob gets help, proud that with “my tools” he has learned to take a deep breath and get back in control.

BOB is an absorbing foray into a world that, fortunately, most of us will never have to live through. A dysfunction that binds even us outside observers together is blessed indeed.
