But it’s the scatty and lovable web of interplay that distinguishes Cirque Éloize. People move pianos in and out, they sing and dance and play in a motley marching band. They exchange wigs, they twirl around in pointe shoes. They do clowning bits — pratfalls, sleight-of-hand — as players who have too much to do and are gallantly coping. Eventually some of them sprout wings — possibly a sly allusion to their monster circus compatriot Cirque du Soleil, whose show Corteo was written and directed by the head of their own creative team, Daniele Finzi Pasca. Cirque du Soleil may be glamorous, but Cirque Éloize leaves you singing in the rain.
