Guest performers are hardly restricted to downtown theaters. The Institute of Contemporary Art brings in WILLIAM YANG — SHADOWS (March 21-22). The Australian photographer and performance artist’s artfully enhanced slideshow tells an imagistic story about his country’s outsiders: Aboriginals and German immigrants. Charlestown Working Theater plays host to Manhattan-based Great Small Works, which arrives bearing AN EVENING OF TOY THEATER (February 29–March 2). Taking its cues from 19th-century Victorian parlor activities, the troupe performs fantasy-laden stories that are small in scale but large in ideas. Sticking with 19th-century-inspired works, CWT then welcomes Nova Scotia’s Zuppa Circus in PENNY DREADFUL (March 13-15). A scullery maid with delusions of sainthood and a property master’s son with wanderlust are two players in a love triangle portrayed by this physical-theater troupe. And if Victorians aren’t lusty enough for you, try SouthCity Theatre’s comic romp BURLESQUE ME IF I LOVE YOU: A VAUDEVILLE RENDEZVOUS (February 28–March 2), which offers a shot of vaudeville sizzle to melt the snow off Old Man Winter.
