GASP, a Brookline alternative space run by artist Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons and her husband, nearly doubled its exhibition and performance area in the spring and plans to open a shop of artist-designed jewelry, dishes, and furnishings on November 21. But it's simultaneously cutting back, says Campos-Pons, reducing the number of art studios it rents out from 11 to four in January.
"I think it's worse off for sure," says Marsching of the local gallery scene. "A year and two years ago, it felt to me like there were options. Things were opening up and building on each other. There were possibilities. Now it feels like its time to hunker down and make work."
